Using a portable ice machine for battling emergencies

Emergency is one of the most hated words in everyone’s dictionary. As you are struggling through it you always think only if life could be any easier. Today, let us explore how an ice maker helps you in emergencies. We know what you might be thinking right now but before you completely dismiss the idea let us explain to you how to use a portable ice machine for emergency preparedness.

This video is sourced from YouTube@GARVEE

Using an ice machine for emergencies

Portable ice machines are compact ice makers that can be easily moved from place to place. It has a decent capacity of ice production, some can produce up to 50 pounds of ice in a day. Ice maker machines are getting popular not only in commercial establishments but also homes.

In this article we will discuss a few emergency situations where an ice machine can save the day.

Preserve your food during a blackout

Power outages are often out of the blue incidents. A sudden warning of a hurricane causing a major blackout to incidents as simple as a tree falling on an electrical line on the grid can cut out electricity of a whole state. While technology has moved forward and sometimes these things get fixed quickly, there are times when blackouts last for days.

Remember Hurricane Sandy that left millions of people without power in multiple states in the United States for several days. In 2013, in Vietnam, a truck driver who was moving a tree let it bump onto a line in the national power grid. This led to an outage in 22 provinces and cities in the southern part of Vietnam. It took 8 hours before power was fully restored.

During emergencies like this you are always looking for survival. The first on the survival list is making sure enough food and water. Most of us will turn our head towards the fridge when someone mentions food. You take careful stock of the food items to be rationed in the fridge. Some of them are expiring soon and others only have a few more days left. With no power, they will only expire sooner.

Now most people have generators at their home so you will say we can work our fridge on that. But, during a national power outage do you really want to spend that energy on running a side by side fridge when it can be spent on running the room heater to escape the cold. So what can you do to maintain the cooling in side the fridge for a little while longer until the power comes back on.

This can be done by storing a few bags of ice in the fridge. You can put one bag in the freezer and a few others in various places in the fridge. But how can you produce all this ice, using an ice maker of course. Switch on your ice maker and let it make some ice cubes to fill up a few bags. If you fill drinking water in the ice machine to make ice cubes, you can drink the water when it thaws.

Most ice makers are energy saving meaning it will only consume negligible power, conserving your backup power. Ice bags will help significantly cool down the fridge maintaining the temperature for at least a few hours.

Save your pets from a heatstroke

You might have noticed that our adorable fur babies at home love munching on ice, especially dogs. Many cats are obsessing with nibbling on ice as well. This is an excellent way for them to hydrate and cool down during a hot summer afternoon.

Imagine you have pet boarding center. You have created this little hotel for the pets to relax and have some fun activities like swimming and games. But you have got to be careful when its summers. Dogs easily succumb to heatstroke especially dog breeds Bulldogs, Mastiffs, Pugs, Chow Chows, etc., can quickly become overcome by heat. Cats can also be a victim to this specifically, breeds like Persian cats.

What if one of them is going through a heatstroke? You notice that Thomas the bulldog is panting hard and his gums have reddened. He is drooling and his movements look clumsy. All signs of a heatstroke. The first thing to do is give him some water and pour some water on him. You can then give him some iced water to drink followed with some ice to munch. Make sure you decrease the temperature of the drinking water gradually.

What if you don’t have ice in your fridge at the moment? You can’t make ice in a instant with a refrigerator. Here is where a portable ice machine come in handy. In just 6 minutes you can get a few ice cubes enough give Thomas some iced water.

The best way to battle heatstroke at a pet boarding is to have an ice machine produce ice in regular intervals so you can give all your pet guests some iced water. You can even give them some ice to munch on during the day.

An ice machine like the Garvee portable ice maker can produce 26 pounds of ice per day. In an hour you can have 1 pound of ice ready to be served. It can tirelessly produce ice and is your best companion to weather summer heat to help cool down the pets.

Battle physical injuries

Sports academies and military training centers are establishments where ones physical strength and attributes are honed. These establishments are used sports injuries related to exerting undue pressure on the body. Bruises, sprains, strains, joint injuries and nose bleeds are some of the common injuries you would see in a sports arena.

Large military camps and sports academies have numerous people and children training at a variety of physical sports. Therefore, it is only natural multiple people have some or the other sports injury. What if there are 10 people in the nurse’s room waiting to be treated. And what if all of them just wanted an ice pack?

Consider keeping an ice machine near your sports areas with a supply of recyclable plastic ziplock bags. People who face minor sports injuries can immediately access this setup to make a DIY ice bag for themselves. This can give them an immediate first aid instead of having to go all the way to the nurse’s room.

Hydrating thirsty patients

Studies show that patient a small hospital generally requires 10 pounds of ice every day. The ice demand in larger hospitals are even higher. Ice is used for hydration, physical therapy, and to treat wounds in a hospital. This is a very critical point while discussing how to use a portable ice machine for emergency preparedness.

Imagine there is an epidemic in the country and people find it hard to drink water. Chewable ice is used as an easier way to water the body. Patient’s put ice in their mouth which begins to melt, allowing them to automatically swallow small amounts of water at a time.

But an epidemic would need large scale ice production. This is where portable ice makers come in handy. The ice makers if made available in critical patient care units like ICU can become an instant hydration source helping the nurses fetch ice instantly for the patients. Instead of using the commercial ice maker situated in the hallways, a portable ice maker can sit comfortably on a countertop and produce nugget ice on command almost instantaneously.

Ice maker like Garvee Nugget Ice Maker can produce up to 2 pounds of ice in an hour. Enough for hydrating at least 5 patients. It even has an option to help users schedule their ice making so they can have ice for all regular usage without interruptions.

Shrivel shield for plants

Many pf us like having plants at home. Some flowering plants in the garden, air purifying indoor plants, climbers in the balcony, etc., are some of the favorite plant setups for people. But all these need to be watered everyday.

Let us say you have an early day at the office. You did get ready on time but completely forgot that you had to water your plants. If you don’t water them, they will shrivel by the time you get back. Now you don’t want to fill up your watering can and lug it around. You might risk getting your office attire wet and dirty.

Instead get some ice and put a few ice cubes in every pot. This will melt into the pot hydrating your plant. This saves time as you can easily scoop up some ice and dump it every pot, instead of hovering over it with a watering can and making sure the soil is watered evenly.

Sourcing a few pounds of ice enough for all your plants almost instantaneously can only be done if you have an ice machine to do the task for you. In a single ice making cycle a portable ice maker can easily give out about 2 pounds of ice.

We have described above some of the great ways on how to use a portable ice machine for emergency preparedness. From needing to make a batch of ice cold lemonade for your cool down and hydrate kids to treating injuries at hospitals, ice has multi-fold uses in emergency situations. Modern day’s ice demands can only be met by modern day ice maker machines.
